Water cooled chillers pump water through a sealed condenser and disperse it through a cooling tower. Air cooled chillers use fans to force cool air across the condenser. These chillers can be applied to any industrial process that requires year-round cooling, including Hydraulics, plastic molding, chemical, food & pharmaceutical production.
Arrived at KIG in August 2017 was this nice 2005 Temptek Air Cooled Chiller. This is an indoor chiller, and can be used for higher temp manufacturing applications as well. This unit is 208/230 volt SINGLE phase, has a reservoir tank, a 1/2 hp positive displacement pump.
With evaporative cooling condensers, their coefficients-of-performance are very high; typically 4.0 or more. Air cooled condensers are installed and operated outdoors and are cooled with outside air, that is often forced through the condenser using electric fans. Water or liquid cooled condensers are cooled with water that is in turn cooled by a cooling tower. Chilled water is used to cool and dehumidify air in mid- to large-size commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. Water chillers can be water-cooled, air-cooled, or evaporatively cooled.

In areas with drought conditions, you may run into restrictions on the use of water-cooled systems as well. Air-cooled chillers don’t use water, so you don’t have to worry about wasting water. They do require a continuous flow of fresh air because they operate by using a condenser that’s cooled by surrounding air.
Chillers provide a continuous flow of coolant to the cold side of a process water system at a desired temperature of about 50°F (10°C). If the system requires less gpm then the pump will reduce in size, meaning less pump energy is used throughout the year. For example, let’s assume the project is a small office building and the owner plans to resell the building within a few years, an air-cooled chiller is often the most desirable in this scenario. However, if the building is a large high school that will be used by the school district for many years, then a water-cooled chiller plant would be the choice to make. In terms of costs, there are fewer components in an air-cooled chiller plant, reducing the initial costs of the plant.
